Cause of Coral Death

Black band disease kills coral tissue by exposing coral to a toxic environment of sulfide and anoxia that is present at the base of the band. These microenvironments can be measured using microelectrodes. In these figures, the y axis represents depth in mm into the band, with 0 representing the band surface.  Oxygen concentrations are designated as open circles, sulfide as closed circles. The figures on the left are profiles under varying light conditions (noted in the figures); the figure on the right is after a prolonged period of darkness. (From Carlton and Richardson, 1995)
