Algal Gall Structure

Freshly collected algal gall sliced in
half (1,2). 2 shows layers of skeleton (marked by white lines)
composing a capsule between layers of filamentous algae. Arrows
point to masses of purple axial sheath sclerites that proliferate
within the coenenchyme of algal-infected regions of the colony. 3:
cross-section of uninfected branch; 4: longitudinal section of
uninfected branch.

Cross-section of uninfected
Pseudoplexaura flagellosa. Note compact skeletal layers (sk)
with typical central core (cc). The coenenchyme layer contains
solenial canals (s), mesoglea (m) and matrices of dissolved
sclerites. Alcian blue stain x 160.
