The standing stock of microzooplankton on mid-shelf coral 
reefs in the central Great Barrier Reef was investigated 
based on samples collected with a Niskin bottle in Feb and 
Oct 1989. The observed net decrease in standing stock of 
microzooplankton across the reef flat suggests that a lack of 
information on their standing stock on coral reefs has led to 
an underestimate of the allochthonous energy input to coral 
reef systems.
